About Us

Willard R Smith Photography – the husband and wife team of Willard “Ryan” and Marta Smith – brings you unique views of everyday scenes.

As recent transplants to the Low Country, we are continuing in South Carolina the work in artistic photographic images we started in Northern Virginia in 2008.  The beautiful scenery of the area offers great opportunities to expand our fine art gallery. Our goal as landscape photographers is to explore a vision of the natural world, including elements added by humans in interaction with nature, in ways that you may not have seen before, through careful composition, attention to detail and the creative use of light.  Our best work takes normal scenes and brings them to you with a unique perspective that engages your curiosity, interest, and connection to the world around us.

Ryan is a self-taught photographer who has been developing his technique and vision since 1997.  He completed his graduate work for his day job at the University of Virginia in 2011 (”Wahoowa”).  Marta also is self taught as a photographer.

Marta specializes in macro photography – that is, extreme close-ups where the image of the subject is larger than life size.  Her interest is particularly drawn to hardscape textures revealed through this technique.

In 2017, Ryan integrated into his photography an experimental technique called Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). ICM images are created by purposefully and delicately moving the camera while exposing the photograph.    When the camera moves, it creates an abstract image with a painterly effect; in fact, many people first perceive these images as paintings because they have a soft and ethereal look.  Everything is done in the camera – the image is not photoshopped – so much artistic trial and error is required to capture the mood and romance of the scene.

We offer four collections in our gallery.

ICM Abstract Originals are printed in editions of 1.  That is, we will make only one print of each image so purchasers acquire a unique artwork for their collection.

ICM Abstracts are a separate set of images created with the ICM technique.  They are available in open edition in a variety of sizes.

Elements is our macro collection.  The images are an open edition and are printed only in sizes 10”x10”, 20”x20”, or 30”x30”.

Our Traditional collection contains realist plein air images, some of which include enhancements by camera and computer techniques.  They are also available in open edition in a variety of sizes.

Our entire body of work is available in the form of fine art prints on canvas, metallic papers or metal.
